Rep. Huffman introduces bill aimed at banning offshore drilling on the West Coast
EUREKA, Calif. — North Coast Rep. Jared Huffman introduced a bill on Tuesday that would effectively ban offshore oil and gas drilling on the West Coast.
The West Coast Ocean Protection Act, introduced by Huffman and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, is in response to what the legislators call an environmentally harmful industry.
“Offshore drilling poses unacceptable risks, and the science and public opinion are clear: we should not put our oceans and fisheries, coastal communities, economies, and planet at risk just to enrich the fossil fuel industry,” Huffman said in a press release.
Offshore drilling is banned in state waters off the coast of California and no new drilling has been allowed in federal waters along the pacific coast, Huffman said. The congressman went on to say actions by the Trump administration in 2018 to reopen the west to new drilling pose a threat to the region's history of stopping new drilling.
